Sergey Bubka commences Olympic research project

July 21, 2011 - PRLog -- IOC Member and IAAF Senior Vice President Sergey Bubka has begun a Doctorate research project into the impact of the Olympic Movement on world affairs.

Bubka, the former Olympic pole vault champion and current world record holder, will analyse the integration of the Olympic Movement on all aspects of life including social, economic and geopolitical.

He will study the Sciences Doctorate at the Ukraine National University of Physical Education and Sports and expects to finish the research by the end of 2012 to include the impact of the 2012 London Olympics.

Bubka, who is also the President of the Ukraine NOC, said: “The impact of the Olympic Movement on different aspects of life is often underestimated. It is commonly believed that history is defined by politics, that wars and crises are landmarks of the past. However, sport and the Olympics in particular have their own undeniable importance in human history.

“The prospects of the Olympic Movement look great now. The Olympic Games is the most widely viewed and closely followed sporting event in the world. Many initiatives reflecting Olympic ideals have been created to help improve our way of life such as the Green Olympic policy that acts as a model for the future society. We have many opportunities to make the world a better place, but we need to use them properly. Such opportunities come with great responsibility and that is why studying the past is at the same time looking for ways to advance for the future”.

Bubka already holds a PhD degree for his study on ‘educating students’ individual abilities by physical culture and sports’ which he completed at the Ukraine Academy of Pedagogical Sciences in 2001.

He added: “This is not something I have just decided to do. I’ve been preparing for this for 10 years, since I completed my PhD.”

The research extends to all periods of Olympic history – from Ancient Greece and Rome until modern times.
