There is a constant feeling of apprehension, worry and restlessness. To some extent, anxiety is not bad as it keeps us alert and motivates us to act even in the midst of difficult circumstances. But if anxiety is continuous and overwhelming not in conscious controls then it is called anxiety disorder. In such cases, it is advisable to go for anxiety treatment.
Broadly, there are three options for anxiety treatment:
1. Self help: Self help is the most important tool to combat anxiety. Many people are uncomfortable with therapy or medication. Those suffering from anxiety can try relaxation techniques like deep breathing and meditation to reduce stress. Exercise is also a natural stress-buster. A few minutes of exercise daily can provide sufficient anxiety relief.
2. Anxiety therapy: Anxiety therapy is very effective in the treatment of anxiety disorders. The two most effective treatments for anxiety are Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Exposure Therapy.
• Cognitive behavioural Therapy is highly effective in treating panic disorders, phobias and depression. This anxiety therapy focuses first on the cognitions or thoughts of the person suffering from anxiety, and then on the associated behavioural patterns. This helps to identify the negative thought processes and irrational ideas, which are the cause of the anxiety.
• Exposure Therapy makes the patient confront his worse fears, but in a controlled environment. Repeated exposure to these fears will also provoke the anxiety repeatedly, and with some time, the patient will learn to control and face his fears. He will gradually become immune to the cause of anxiety.
Depression: Anxiety and depression are closely related. Most people who suffer from anxiety disorders also end up suffering from depression. It is therefore imperative that the patient goes for professional anxiety and depression therapy. The most obvious solution for those suffering from depression is taking antidepressant medication. Taken under the guidance of a medical practitioner, these will provide some relief. But medication cannot cure the cause of depression, and once the medication stops, depression will recur. The most effective mental depression treatment is to go for depression therapy.
Depression therapy concentrates on the main cause of the depression and the emotions surrounding it. It is very effective for long-term depression treatment. Other effective mental depression treatment can include relaxation techniques, meditation, stress-management, exercise and a positive attitude towards life.
Relationship Therapy: Anxiety and depression can stem from strained relationships and problems within the family. In such cases, relationship therapy can bring estranged couples together. The basis of relationship therapy is that it provides a secure and confidential environment, where the couple can lay open their issues before a professional therapist. This helps in identifying the problem areas and then addressing them one by one.
