July 19, 2011 - PRLog -- Alnico is a commonly used permanent magnet, also known as a stock magnet. Alnico retains its magnetic properties for a long time, which is why it is considered a permanent magnet.

Alnico magnets have excellent temperature stability and can perform in high temperatures. Alnico magnets are often used in industrial and manufacturing industries because they can withstand high temperatures of up to 525 degrees Celsius.

When it comes to affordable magnets, alnico is certainly a good choice because it can be customized to the size or strength you need at very affordable prices.

The benefits to using alnico magnets are great and include their strength, affordability, resistance to extremely high temperatures and the fact that they maintain their magnet qualities for long periods of time.

For a variety of industrial and consumer applications alnico magnets are a great choice.

Ceramic magnets, also known as ceramic ferrite or ferrite magnets are extremely popular. The popularity of these magnets is due to their affordability and longevity.

Ceramic ferrite magnets are produced from affordable materials and are permanent magnets, which means they keep their magnetism for a long period of time which is why they are such a good choice for use in industrial applications as well as at work, in your garage or at home.

Ferrite magnets are made from a chemical that contains iron oxide and ceramic. They are made from pressing and sintering mixtures of ceramic and magnetic powders. The result is a hard, brittle magnet. The process of making objects from a powder is known as sintering.

Sintering is finished off by heating materials in a furnace until the particles of powder stick to each other, but don't melt..

Neodymium magnet is a rare earth magnet made from neodymium, a chemical element with the symbol Nd and atomic number 60. Neodymium easily tarnishes in the air and is a silvery, soft metal present in the ore minerals bastnasite and monazite. Neodymium magnets are preferred for certain applications because of their strength and ability to perform in extreme conditions.

For applications using temperatures of 125 - 150 degrees Celsius neodymium is the preferred magnetic choice. Neodymium are preferred over ferrite or alnico magnets in certain applications because they are much stronger. The advantages to using neodymium magnets and other products made from neodymium are numerous.

The major pros to neodymium are its strength, popularity, affordability and ability to perform in frigid conditions, however there are still some cons to using this rare earth magnet. With a lower Curie temperature than samarium-cobalt (another rare earth magnet), neodymium cannot resist excessively high temperatures, and could lose its magnetism if placed in an environment with a temperature that is too hot.

Neodymium does perform well in cold temperatures. Unlike samarium-cobalt, another rare earth magnet, neodymium is less resistant to oxidation which means it is ultimately not as durable and must have a surface treatment applied in order to protect the magnet from being scratched.

Since neodymium is brittle and can form cracks due to corrosion manufacturers often apply treatments of tin, gold, nickel or zinc platings or coatings to the surface to protect it. Neodymium magnets can be improved through the application of a good plating or coating which will minimize cracks and the process of oxidization..

High energy strip magnets are a powerful type of flexible magnetic strip. A high energy strip magnet has a nitrile rubber base which makes it more resistant to oils and acid.

Magnet energy refers to the stored energy in a magnet, and is often measured in MGOe (megagaussoersteds). Available in 1.1 - 1.6 MGOe, high energy strip magnets are more powerful than normal flexible magnetic strips.

Magnetic strips have adhesive backing, are often laminated and come in many different shapes and sizes. Truly versatile, flexible magnetic strips will stick to any ferrous surface, are available in different dimensions and can be cut to length. Magnetic tape has a variety of uses in school, work and around the home.

Magnetic tape is really useful - on the front is an adhesive face and the back has a magnetic face. Magnetic tape is thin, flexible, versatile and affordable, which makes it useful for a number of applications.

Block magnets in general are an extremely durable choice of magnet and tend to have high levels of magnetism, which make them perfect to use in industrial settings. Depending on your needs, the composition you choose for your block magnet will differ. You should consider the purpose and conditions you will use the magnet for before you choose the type of block magnet to use.

Rare earth magnets like samarium-cobalt and neodymium are stronger than alnico, ferrite or ceramic magnets, making them good choices for industrial applications where the magnet needs to able to handle heavy duty applications and uses.

Some magnets will lose or maintain magnetism at different temperatures which is why you should keep the temperature as well as the strength of magnet required in mind when you make a decision. Finally, consider how difficult (or easy) it is to demagnetize the magnet type you choose as the basis for your block magnet. Depending on the need, you may want to choose a magnet type that is difficult to demagnetize.
