Here in this article, we’ll look at four great ways that fish oil could help prevent heart disease.

1. Lowers Triglycerides: This is the one area where omega-3 fatty acids found in fish oils are well documented. Four grams a day of fish oil may lower triglyceride levels by 30% — these levels are the most sensitive to the omega-3s you eat in fish. There is a specific, documented relationship between fish oil and triglyceride levels. A review of studies found this to be accurate, but said what remained to be determined is how omega-3s did such a thing. Elsewhere, even people with high triglycerides when they haven’t recently eaten anything have experienced significant improvements after eating fish oil omega-3 in a very important area: the flow of blood through their blood vessels.

2. Fights Arrhythmia: Some studies have led to very interesting conclusions, namely that omega-3s could lessen the risk of sudden cardiac death. Omega-3s have may have a stabilizing effect on the heart. Heart attack survivors were found to have a healthier, more consistent heart rate when they ate one fish meal each week. The two acids in question, EPA and DHA, help lower your resting heart rate and blood flow through the ventricles. Fish oil has potent “antiarrhythmic” effects on your body as well. It seems to help heart tissue withstand damage, as well as tissues around the brain.

3. Lowers Blood Pressure: Depending on the dose, omega- 3s could have a small effect against hypertension. In research studies where people consumed a lot of the fatty acids (anywhere from three to six grams), blood pressure decreased significantly. It also seems that DHA does better than EPA in this regard. Fish oil supplements will help, but overall omega-3's role in managing blood pressure is limited for the time being. Nevertheless, this is another reason why fish is a heart-booster.

4. Reduces Threat of Plaque: Omega-3s could help prevent plaque from developing in your blood vessels and cells, a definite precursor to heart problems. The answers are not easily understood, but it has something to do with the metabolism of substances that help stop inflammation. Both EPA and DHA have an effect on plaque development, inhibiting the inflammatory molecules and the possibility of platelets forming.
