MXR, purveyors of some of the finest guitar and bass FX pedals known to man, have strengthened their range with four fabulous new stomp boxes. Distributed in the UK and Eire by John Hornby Skewes & Co. Ltd., MXR counts some of the best players on the planet – Zakk Wylde, Kirk Hammett and Eddie Van Halen, to name just three – among its devotees, and these four new pedals are sure to grow the fan club even more.
The MXR M78 Custom Badass '78 Distortion, at £109rrp, is packed full of old-school distortion and amp stack tones. To get the full-on Badass sound, Dunlop took a classic distortion circuit and hot-rodded it to deliver over-the-top soaring leads and rich, saturated rhythms. With only three knobs – Output, Tone, and Distortion – dialling in a full-on badass tone is a cinch, and there is also a CRUNCH button for those moments when you really need to take it to 11.
Particularly suited to those of the rock persuasion is the MXR M195 Noise Clamp (£119rrp). Capable of reducing Noise up to 26dB, the Noise Clamp allows players to maintain riff definition at extreme gain levels without the fear of any hiss or excess noise. By sensing the guitar's dry signal, the Noise Clamp reduces the noise level within the effect loop, coming down hard on even the noisiest signals. A single Trigger knob sets the volume threshold at which the pedal is active, and a green LED shows whether the gate is on/off.
The all-analogue MXR M234 Analog Chorus, £134rrp, uses bucket-brigade circuitry to create classically lush, liquid textures. Rate, Level, and Depth controls – as well as knobs for cutting High and Low frequencies – allow ultimate tone control, and the kind of sounds that digital circuitry cannot replicate. This all adds up to shimmery rhythm parts, water-drenched leads, or whatever tone you need to make your playing come alive.
Finally, the ZW90 Zakk Wylde Phase (£134rrp) becomes the latest signature Wylde MXR stompbox, following on from the Wylde Berzerker Overdrive and the Wylde Stereo Chorus (both £135). To round off his FX list, Wylde also has the Cry Baby Zakk Wylde Signature Wah (£159).
The Wylde Phase adds dimension and dynamics to Zakk's blazing solos and razor sharp leads. The single Rate knob adjusts the Speed of the warm analogue phasing, from a slow grind to a jack hammering pulse; Zakk himself uses it at the 9 o'clock position for a slow burning sweep.
Available now, all four pedals are typical MXR – built in a heavy-duty housing with durable jacks and switches for a lifetime on the road. Click the links below to find out more.
