July 16, 2011 - PRLog -- One of the first things you must do before jumping into the birthday party business is to decide what type of character you will portray and what skills and props you will use. Will you be a magician? In that case you will need to obtain magic tricks and learn how to use them. Or perhaps you will be a puppeteer? If so, what type of puppets will you use – hand puppets, mouth puppets, finger puppets? Will you use ventriloquism or will your puppet communicate in other ways? Will you be a balloon worker and make balloon animals and toys? Or perhaps you will be a storyteller and face painter. A puppeteer can use puppets, storytelling, and even magic. You don’t have to stick to any one skill. Combining skills offers greater variety and more options for entertainment.
Choose at least one skill you enjoy doing. You don’t need to be an expert in this skill, but you should practice enough to feel confident. If you want to learn more skills, you can add them later.
Whatever skills you use, you will need to develop a distinct character to accompany them. For children’s audiences comedy is most effective. If you choose to learn magic, for example, will you present a comedy magic show? You have the choice to become wither a comic magician or as a clown magician. What’s the difference? The character, A magician dresses seriously and conveys the image of the traditional magician, even though he uses funny stories, tells jokes, and may even make a mistake now and then. The other is primarily a clown, pretending to be a skilled magician. The clown is a buffoon and not a skilled, intelligent master of the magical arts. His character is more light-hearted and whimsical. He may perform some impressive feats if magic, but most of the time he appears confused or frustrated, because he hasn’t quite mastered the techniques of the art – or so it seems.
