Prostate Cancer Vaccine Now Available at The Oncology Institute of Hope and Innovation

July 14, 2011 - PRLog -- Provenge is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of asymptomatic or minimally symptomatic metastatic castrate resistant (hormone refractory) prostate cancer (mCRPC). It is the first in a new class of autologous cellular immunotherapies and is designed to use a patient’s own antigen-presenting cells to stimulate an immune response against prostate cancer.

The Oncology Institute of Hope and Innovation is one of the few selected cancer centers in Southern California to offer Provenge.  

Candidates for Provenge therapy are mCRPC patients with rising PSA levels who are minimally symptomatic. They should have evidence of metastases to the bone or soft tissue on radiographic studies but no visceral metastasis (lung, liver or brain).  Any radiation therapy or chemotherapy must have been completed at least three months prior to beginning treatment with Provenge.  In addition, patients may not have had corticosteroids within the last twenty-eight days.
