Throughout the course of the expedition the Source 44 team will be gathering emissions data first-hand with the goal of uncovering reduction opportunities for future climbs.
“The data collected on this expedition will be invaluable in helping us to identify additional opportunities to improve carbon-friendly mountaineering,”
“Building on those discoveries will provide us with new scientific information that would be very difficult to obtain without first-hand verification,”
The Source 44 expedition team will be measuring carbon emissions on a real-time basis. Dr. Jennifer Kraus, Source 44’s Chief Scientific Officer, has joined the team to ensure all aspects of the expedition are accurately measured and documented.
“As a sustainability data management company, we are fully committed to identifying best practices for reducing carbon footprints through first-hand observation,”
Source 44 has planned this undertaking to minimize its own carbon dioxide emissions. Information gained from the Mt. Vinson climb has assisted their plans for the Mt. Rainier expedition – from the selection of equipment and clothing to transportation of the climbers using alternative fuels.
Source 44 sustainability analysts in California will also be closely monitoring the expedition, collecting data that will enable the company to offset any remaining carbon dioxide emissions by purchasing verified carbon offsets.
“Our ultimate goal is to one day construct a truly carbon-neutral expedition that doesn’t require offsets,” Dr. Kraus said. “Developing guidelines for future expeditions brings us one step closer to realizing that vision.”
The five Source 44 representatives in the expedition team are
- Jess Kraus, President and CEO
- Jennifer Kraus, PhD., Chief Scientific Officer
- Matthew Thorn, Chief Operating Officer
- Ed Viesturs, Chief Spokesperson
- Dan Dague, Advisor

About Mount Rainier
Mount Rainier, at 14,410 feet, is the most extensively glaciated volcanic peak in the contiguous United States. The Mountain, as it is known to locals, offers limitless mountaineering possibilities to both aspiring and experienced mountaineers. Indeed, the combination of high altitude, various route choices, and Northwest weather make climbing Mount Rainier a truly challenging experience.
