New Market Study Published: Hong Kong Telecommunications Report Q3 2011

New Fixed Networks market report from Business Monitor International: "Hong Kong Telecommunications Report Q3 2011"

July 13, 2011 - PRLog -- We have incorporated latest figures from Hong Kong's telecoms regulator, the Office of Telecommunications Authority (OFTA), and mobile operators such as PCCW Mobile and SmarTone Telecommunications. Notably, the number of mobile and 3G subscribers in Hong Kong exceeded our expectations. Consequently, we have revised upwards several of our forecasts in light of strong growth figures.

We now forecast the number of mobile subscribers in Hong Kong to reach 14.623mn in 2011 before increasing to 17.092mn in 2015. The industry's recent growth momentum was mainly driven by prepaid subscribers. At the end of December 2010, the OFTA reported that there were 6.6mn prepaid subscribers, of which 5.127mn are deemed active by the regulator. By comparison, there were 6.816mn postpaid subscribers. The postpaid segment added 2.560mn between 2001 and 2010, while the prepaid segment (active and inactive) had a net addition of 5.155mn. The rapidly growing number of prepaid subscribers could be attributed to factors such as growing number of tourists visiting Hong Kong and an influx of foreign labour. As a result, mobile operators have launched attractive prepaid plans to capitalise on the market's growth potential. However, given the industry's overall high mobile penetration, we believe that a slowdown is inevitable, and this is reflected in our forecast scenario.

PCCW consolidated its market leader position in Hong Kong's broadband industry with 1.367mn subscribers at the end of 2010. City Telecom-owned Hong Kong Broadband Network (HKBN) reported that its broadband subscriber base reached 526,000, while i-Cable continued to see its subscriber base, which came in at 228,000, being eroded among its larger rivals. HKBN announced in April 2011 that its symmetric 1Gbps broadband service has signed up more than 10,000 subscribers, and is on track to meet its goal of making the service the mass market norm in the territory. HKBN attributed the achievement to its pricing strategy, which makes its high-speed broadband connection one of the most affordable in the world. The provider offers its 1Gbps broadband service at HKD199 a month.

Hong Kong was ranked sixth in BMI's latest Business Environment Ratings for the Asia Pacific region. The territory had the lowest Telecoms Rating score among its developed peers in the region, and holds a 3.6pps lead over emerging market Malaysia. Hong Kong's economy expanded by an impressive 7.2% yo- y in Q111, driven mainly by strong private consumption and net exports growth. Given the strong print, we are revising our 2011 Hong Kong growth forecast upwards, from 4.1% to 5.0%. However, we highlight that our upgraded growth forecast remains below consensus, as we expect a considerable slowdown in mainland China's economy in H211 to hit Hong Kong's trade, tourism and property sectors.
