The Science, Innovation & Entrepreneurship Program Brings Relevancy and Creativity to STEM Education

Biz in a Boxx™ and Discover Science 4 Kids offer their one-of-a-kind program to kids ages 8-12.

July 12, 2011 - PRLog -- Biz in a Boxx™ and Discover Science 4 Kids believe that fusing science and entrepreneurship together helps kids understand the relevancy of their coursework.  Since December 2010, the two Scottsdale-based businesses have been successfully piloting and testing their unique “Science, Innovation & Entrepreneurship” program that gets young kids interested in STEM education by encouraging innovation and the creation of new, marketable products.

“It’s not enough to simply have kids do control experiments without showing them how to apply the outcomes to the real world,” says Sherri Smith-Dodgson, CEO of Discover Science 4 Kids.  “If, as educators, we’re looking to get kids interested in core curriculum subjects, we need to cross-reference into other areas.  When you think about it, entrepreneurship can be applied to any subject.”

The program first began at the Microsoft Store in Scottsdale, AZ where kids in first grade on up participated in themed “ologies”, such as Germology, Fizzology and Sugarology.  Kids learned the science behind the workshop theme and then developed their own products from what they had learned.  An entrepreneurial element was also added so that kids could understand that product development starts at the core of their STEM education.

“There’s an opportunity with our program for kids to take their interest in science, technology, engineering and math to a whole new level,” says, Melissa Rose, president of Biz in a Boxx™.  “Kids are great innovators because they don’t see the walls that box in so many adult ideas.  And our Science, Innovation & Entrepreneurship champions that through a tested, successful delivery method.”

From July 25-29, 2011, the hands-on Science, Innovation & Entrepreneurship Advanced Workshop for kids ages 8-12 will be held at two locations in Scottsdale.  Kids will spend a week understanding the science behind plastic and engineering biodegradable plastic to make their own games or toys.  The kids will use the patent-pending Biz in a Boxx™ system to then develop a business and business plan around their new product.
