Society may have moved beyond the stereotype that sports are for guys, but studies offer a striking reality check – girls are still far less physically active than boys. It's a fact that can have far-reaching consequences for health and self-esteem. As part of The Balancing Act ‘myHealth’
“We welcome this opportunity to appear on The Balancing Act to help educate viewers on our joint efforts, and common goals,” says Gable. “The Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation is working hard to teach kids how to maintain a healthy weight. We believe that fit kids grow up to become fit young adults.”
Growing up healthy is a central theme of the Girl Scouts, and by teaming up with the Healthy Weight Commitment Foundation they’re working together to motivate young girls to make healthier choices. “Focusing just on diet and exercise doesn't really work for girls,” says Cloninger. “We need to integrate things like self esteem, body image, and relationship issues.”
“We've actually started a new program asking families to do more meals and exercise together. We believe girls can be leaders in getting their families to commit to healthy living,” adds Gable. “That's why we're so excited about our partnership with the Girl Scouts.”
