July 11, 2011 - PRLog -- The Gerber Bear Gryllls Basic Survival Kit's mantra is “Stay prepared. Stay Alive”.
Who knows what dangers lie ahead when walking off the beaten track, traversing hills or climbing mountains? You may not be able to control exactly what happens when out in the back country but you can control how you prepare. As an expert adventurer and ex-SAS trooper, preparing for the great outdoors is second nature to Bear Grylls, so one would expect that he would not put his name on anything less than stellar... let's find out.

The Gerber Bear Grylls Basic Survival Kit is designed to provide the absolute essentials needed to survive if you happen to end up in a difficult situation. The survival kit is compact and weighs in  at 4.2oz, it will fit into most rucksacks inoffensively. Gerber have packed many of the basic survival tools you will need into this small kit. In the 1930s a mountain climbing and hiking club called The Mountaineers described what is known as “The Ten Essentials”. These are a list of essential items that are recommended to take with you - hikers and climbers in particular - when out and about in the great outdoors and the Bear Grylls Basic Survival Kit includes most of these without compromising its portability.

It is an 8 piece kit and contained within a kit waterproof bag is:  a Gerber mini-paraframe knife, emergency whistle, snare wire, emergency cord, cotton ball – fire tinder, fire starter, waterproof matches, land to air instructions and a pocket guide of Bear Grylls' survival essentials.

Bear Grylls' “Priorities of Survival” mini- guidebook contains a lot of great tips on how to use the items included in the kit effectively in emergency scenarios. The mini-paraframe knife is a sturdy little thing, not to be used as a primary knife but it is a reliable backup. The emergency whistle works as one would expect. The fire starter and waterproof matches lit up without any hitches. There really are no surprises, everything worked well and as it should, which is exactly how gear in a survival kit should function and overall I was very happy with the performance and build quality of the equipment included within the kit.

The Gerber Bear Grylls Basic Survival Kit is currently on offer at Above & Beyond. At only £22.50 with free UK shipping, there really is no reason not to have such an important piece of kit in your rucksack – hopefully you will not have to use it. This is a basic kit, for the more fleshed out Ultimate Survival Kit from Gerber and Bear Grylls then head on over to Above & Beyond where it is currently on offer. I would recommend the Ultimate over the Basic kit for more heavy duty trips.
