July 11, 2011 - PRLog -- Women across New York are telling a little red lie.

Phony fashionistas are flocking to an Upper East Side cobbler who has come up with a breakthrough in faux fabulousness -- for $32, he paints the soles of bargain-basement pumps to match the trademark crimson soles of Christian Louboutin Heels( http://www.louboutinshoessales.com/christian-louboutin-heels-c-97.html ).

Aspiring socialites can look like they live the life of Carrie Bradshaw as the bottoms of their T.J. Maxx clodhoppers are transformed into look alike Louboutin Shoes, which are known for both bright-red soles and a price tag in the $600 range.

The man behind the perfidious pump-pimping is Byron Brito of Andrade Shoe Repair on East 85th Street. He says he's been swarmed by women who want to make their fooled friends drool.

"I don't see the obsession, but if people want me to do it, I'll do it," he said.

Brito -- who advertises the "red-sole upgrade" on the window of his shop -- got the idea when women marched in with legit Louboutins in need of repair.

"The sole's very thin," he said.

Brito added red rubber to protect the front, but the shade was slightly off from the rest of the sole, so he began to custom-blend paint in order to have the entire sole look uniform so no one would notice that the shoe had been doctored.

He now applies the same treatment to ordinary shoes, or simply paints the entire sole red.

Even the Midtown Leather Spa, a recommended repair shop on the Christian Louboutin Sale ( http://www.louboutinshoessales.com/ ) Web site, will do red soles on plain shoes for $95.

The Christian Louboutin Shoes look was introduced in 1992, and the company claims the idea stems from the French designer painting red nail polish on a black sole.

The shoes became a status symbol, with fans including Oprah Winfrey -- who regularly wore the heels on her show -- and Sarah Jessica Parker. The high heels were featured on "Sex and the City," and Jennifer Lopez sang about the shoes in her 2009 single "Louboutins."

But trouble is afoot for those who try to copy the iconic shoes. Yves Saint Laurent started selling red-soled shoes and was sued by Christian Louboutin Shoes Sale in federal court in April for trademark infringement.

YSL contends that Louboutin fraudulently obtained a trademark registration for the soles and that the adornment actually goes as far back as those worn by King Louis XIV in the 1600s. The company claims that Louboutin's attempt to monopolize the look "defies common sense."

"During the past 40 years, red outsoles have been used for their ornamental qualities by dozens of designers of women's high-fashion footwear sold in the United States," YSL argues in court papers.

But when women see red, they think Louboutin, according to a consumer survey done by the company for its lawsuit against YSL. Half of those surveyed thought the stilettos in the photos they viewed were Louboutins, and 96 percent thought so because of the scarlet soles.
