Someone who believes in improving the industry standards and someone who dares to be a powerful catalyst for change is shooting for the stars and desires to carry a multitude with her. Unlike ever seen before, a Broadway-bound musical, aimed at social change, is gearing up to take center stage in New York.
Marie Harris, a strong writer and creative visionary, has spent over 5 years developing the musical as a commercial stage production to help make the world a better place. But in a unique twist, this fascinating piece has become the basis of her dissertation. Harris is currently a doctoral business candidate at Argosy University.
Riding on the powerful elements of Hip Hop and the timeless wisdom of Cinderella, this as-of-yet unnamed musical is hoped to “invoke a new mind set and a greater global consciousness for the good of mankind to a diverse audience.” say Harris, a rising philanthropist whose heart is as big as her ideas. “Yet this musical is only the beginning,” she assuredly adds.
Announcing the musical, Harris’ ambitious desire has received great admiration from the business and entertainment community. S. Ghoreishi, a fellow colleague was quoted saying “your artistic view to the world and eloquent writing style are overwhelming. Another supporter, Yowana Weldon has said, “by positioning yourself correctly with the knowledge of the business and industry, you have potential to be an icon for many.”
In addition, industry speculation has this pop-culture show poise as an instant hit. Still today, both Cinderella and the Hip Hop fame are the most popular themes in the entertainment industry; inspiring thousands of songs, shows and brands. Over five hundred versions of this classic tale have been found in Europe and for nearly four decades, Hip Hop has quickly become a household name, generating billions of revenue.
“Everyone loves a good Cinderella story and most our society has been influenced by the Hip Hop culture,” say Harris. We are just incorporating some of the amazing elements of each masterpiece which has the potential to empower, entertain and educate people of all races. As for social change, our country is already on the verge of it. “The timing couldn’t be more right, nor the opportunity more perfect. Harris exclaims.
However, championing real-world change and bringing a ground-breaking musical to Broadway is no easy feat, especially from a courageous writer who hasn't quite met the "status quo." When asked how she will accomplish this huge task, the future Dr. Harris appears unruffled and simply utters what seems to be an inspirational quote: “To find the shortest path to any dream, work with ideas, not facts. Dwell upon the end result, not the hows. And rely upon the Universe, not yourself.”
This "universe", she mentioned, includes not only faith in God, but the collaboration of countless fans, a multi-talented cast and a gifted creative team to help infuse the storyline with everything that makes Broadway great; astonishing characters, an exciting plot, a unique musical score and a powerful universal truth that a diverse audience can relate to.
To begin the journey, the musical will have a kick-off party September 2011 in Washington D.C. Harris feels there is no better place to produce the musical, which is said to be the largest theatre gathering next to New York. "Besides, we must be near the nation's top policy makers to start shaking things up a bit with our powerful social agenda," says Harris.
A "red carpet" sneak premiere follows in December and will be capped by the unveiling of the show's official title and media blast. A promotional campaign is also underway to build the excitement and support for this noteworthy musical cause. No official word about the musical's Broadway try-out date, production schedule, script or who will provide award-winning directing. According to Harris, "most of this information will be revealed at our kick off-party and sneak premiere festivities."
A one-of-a-kind opportunity now exists to experience an incredible musical unfold from page-to-stage-
Can one super mind bring a show all the way to Broadway? Stay tuned.
