The leading Ethiopian news story of the week was the independence of South Sudan from Sudan. South Sudan has become world’s newest nation after breaking away from North Sudan after having fought two bloodiest civil wars fought over a period of five decades, which claimed numerous lives and displaced hundreds of thousands of people from both sides.

The South Korean president pledged to provide active support for the economic development of Ethiopia in order to boost relations with Addis Ababa. Expressing his country’s gratitude to Ethiopia for contribution to South Korea’s cause in the 1950-53 Korean War with North Korea, Lee Myung-bak pledged to extend friendship with Addis Ababa so that both countries become “development cooperation partners.” Ethiopia agreed to share South Korea’s “green growth” vision for eco-friendly growth of both nations.
