Princeton Montessori School Toddlers Find Joy in Intense Focus

Sadie Betz, almost two, is totally focused on her work in a Toddler classroom at Princeton Montessori School. Students as young as Sadie enjoy and thrive on periods of intense concentration and focus.

July 22, 2011 - PRLog -- The design of the Montessori classrooms fosters this ability to focus. They are no garish colors or twirling dangly items hanging from the ceilings. Instead, the colors of the rooms are muted, and the classroom "works" are tastefully and minimally arranged on the low shelves so that students can select items of their choice. The materials are enticing and provide the appropriate level of challenge. They call out to the child's senses.

Teachers remain in the background until needed to help a child or give a lesson on a particular piece of work. Then, like Sadie, students are encouraged to try the work on their own. When she's finished and the work is back on the shelf ready for the next student, the outdoors will no doubt call to her and she will discover other carefully chosen works to engage with outside in the shade or on the classroom's patio.

Sadie and her friends are enrolled in Princeton Montessori School's SummerQuest program. For more information, visit www.princetonmontessorischool.org.
