The Borneo Rainforest Lodge Aims to Preserve the Surrounding Habitat

The Borneo Rainforest Lodge has taken several steps to reduce its impact on the natural environment, in keeping with becoming “green.”

July 7, 2011 - PRLog -- The lodge aims to provide guests with a relaxing atmosphere to explore nature’s wonders, while preserving the surrounding habitat. It is nestled alongside Malaysia’s Danum River, which flows through Sabah’s largest protected Lowland Rainforest: the Danum Valley Conservation area.

Green practices observed by the lodge have resulted in:
•   70% less plastic waste in 2010 by installing refill facilities for filtered water, selling reusable drinking bottles, using only 100% biodegradable, compostable bags or paper bags, and using reusable containers for shampoo and body gel
•   Reduction in energy usage by using solar water heaters, ceiling fans instead of air conditioning in the rooms, installing LED- lamps and/or energy saver bulbs
•   Cleansing of sewage by using natural cleaners containing powerful microbes, anti-oxidants, and enzymes and/or implementation of reed bed

The lodge offers 31 individual chalets, accommodating up to 60 guests per night. In order to preserve the pristine rainforest, the lodge does not plan to increase accommodation. Activities include tubing down the Danum River, trekking through the rainforest, and night safaris to observe wildlife. Visitors can also experience the multi-tiered canopy walk at the lodge, which spans almost 1,000 feet in length, and is up to
85 feet above the ground.

The Danum Valley Conservation Area consists of 43,800 hectares of pristine and undisturbed tropical flora and fauna. It is home to more than 300 species of birds, 120 species of mammals, 72 species of reptiles, 56 species of amphibians, and an incredible 200 species of plants per hectare. Animals roam freely in the conservation area. While animal sightings are not guaranteed, visitors can see orangutans, western tarsiers, pygmy elephants, and bornean hornbills, among many others.
