Catholic Relief Services President to Join U.S. Presidential Delegation to Republic of South Sudan

Ken Hackett will be the only non-governmental representative on the high-level delegation to attend the ceremony marking the Declaration of the Independence of the Republic of South Sudan.

July 7, 2011 - PRLog -- The White House has announced that the Honorable Susan E. Rice, United States Permanent Representative to the United Nations, will lead a delegation representing President Barack Obama that will attend the ceremony marking the Declaration of the Independence of the Republic of South Sudan on July 9, 2011.

Ken Hackett, president of Catholic Relief Services (CRS), has been asked to accompany the delegation as its only non-governmental representative.

CRS has been working in Sudan since the end of the first major civil war in 1972. One of the largest non-governmental humanitarian agencies working in the country, CRS’ relief and development projects serve more than 1 million people across Sudan.

In addition to its many humanitarian aid projects, CRS committed $4 million in private funds to efforts to contribute to a peaceful transformation for Sudan. Much of this was and still is being spent on peacebuilding efforts to ensure a peaceful transition for Africa’s newest country. Working mainly with Church partners, CRS sought to ensure that Southern Sudanese were properly informed about the referendum, to ease tensions between rival groups within the South, and to integrate peacebuilding approaches in all assistance and development work.
