San Francisco’s 41st Gay Pride festival celebrates sexual diversity but the Soul of Pride stage also found time to commemorate the second anniversary of the death of Michael Jackson. How fitting then that a potential pop princess should pay tribute to the king, as fLO hit the stage in a familiar red leather jacket and, surrounded by a flash mob of dancing zombies, recreated that Thriller video.
But it was not all about nostalgia and fLO followed her look back with a taste of the future, playing two songs from her just-released debut album The Exhibition. First came DNA, the record’s opening track and lead single. The zombie crew had departed but a pair of backing dancers joined fLO to get down to the song’s pounding beat.
Not only does she sing and write her own songs, but fLO also choreographs all her own routines. Her background in dance is immediately apparent as the trio let loose some stunning synchronized moves, while fLO honeyed vocals describe her onstage Dirty Nasty Attitude.
Introducing Like Me, fLO talks about the song’s meaning: standing up to people that want to bring you down. It’s a perfect theme for a Pride crowd and they roar back their approval. Like Me’s sexy swagger gets a similar reception and fLO leaves her audience of new found fans smiling in the Sunday sunshine.
It’s a feeling that was familiar to viewers of BET’s 106 & Park, who were wowed by fLO’s dynamic display at her album launch in early June. The forecast says fLO will continue to add new fans all summer long.
The Exhibition is out now on Greater London Records.
