◦Choose a topic that interests you. Whether you are given a small parameter or a large one, make sure you choose something that you can stand reading about, thinking about and writing about. If you're interested in your topic, writing your paper will be interesting instead of something you need simply to get done.
Current Events
◦Look through a newspaper to see what the major events are that people are concerned with. One of these, from local politics to international issues, might spark your interest. Current events will raise questions that you might want an answer to, such as why a particular country is handling a conflict in a certain way, how a war was started, why your city wants to tear down a landmark and more. If an event is in the news, you will be able to find a lot of information about it once you begin your research.
Controversy
◦Choose something with controversy. Every paper has an argument, and every argument has at least two sides. You will be able to make a strong argument if you are able to take up the opposing side's argument and refute it. Remember, once you choose a controversial topic, you'll have to narrow it down. For example, a paper on a large topic such as abortion, gun control or immigration is overwhelming, but if you figure out what it is you want to know about one of these topics, your paper will be more manageable.
■For example, instead of 'gun control you might ask 'Does making people undergo a background check and waiting period before purchasing a gun reduce the number of gun deaths?'

Assignment Criteria
◦Double-check your assignment before beginning to work on your paper before deciding your topic. Does the topic you ultimately chose fit the criteria laid out by your teacher? Is there a certain approach you need to take with your topic, or do you need to alter it slightly?
■Also make sure that you will be able to find the number of resources needed to satsfy the assignment and that your paper is the length set by your teacher.
