New Construction research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

July 7, 2011 - PRLog -- Although forecasts were starting to look promising for the construction sector in Hungary, the latest figures from the National Statistics Agency suggest performance was not as good as expected. Year-onyear (y-o-y) growth for the sector is now forecast at just 3.5% for 2011 compared to 14.1% previously, while the industry is valued at US$5.3bn. Low, single-digit growth will continue over the forecast period, averaging just 3.2% y-o-y until 2015 when the industry value will reach US$6.3bn. Hungary is nonetheless in a relatively strong position compared to many of its regional peers, as private investment remains a key driver.

Contributing factors this quarter included:

*  In May 2011, Vegyepszer, the former state-owned construction firm, submitted a request for bankruptcy protection in order to give its management time to find a way to repay outstanding debts. This follows the spin out of Vegyepszer Hungaria with HUF16bn in short-term liabilities in February. Vegyepszer Hungaria attributed the company's unpaid debt to financial difficulties stemming from the contraction of the construction sector following the onset of the global economic crisis, according to the Budapest Business Journal.
 *  BMI has revised down estimates for the construction sector based on new 2010 breakdowns for infrastructure and 2009 sub-sector breakdowns from the National statistics Agency.

Despite a shaky start to 2011, in which the Hungarian government has been criticised for its policies towards the media, the central bank, large corporates and the country's long-run fiscal position, we remain confident that the Fidesz party will maintain a strong lead over opposition parties over the coming years. Indeed, with the socialist MSZP still blamed for Hungary's economic downturn, and with macroeconomic conditions set to continue picking up under Prime Minister Viktor Orban, we fully expect Fidesz to win the next parliamentary elections in early 2014.

While Hungary's economic recovery remains on track, with real GDP growth picking up to 2.0% in Q410, from 1.7% the previous quarter, our core view - that the pace of expansion will not accelerate considerably over the coming years - remains intact. Indeed, fiscal austerity and debt deleveraging will continue to weigh on overall domestic consumption, leaving net exports the primary driver of growth through to 2013 at least.
