July 4, 2011 - PRLog -- Key Insights And Key Risks

*  The overall insurance sector remains positive and growing, benefiting from Brazil's healthy, stable economic environment.
 *  The sector relies on a continuation of lower long-term interest rates and a stronger currency to maintain its superior long-term growth.
 *  Published results in relation to calendar 2010 have generally been extremely encouraging.
 * There are many competing firms in some sectors and the fragmentation needs to resolve itself for the industry to grow well organically.
 *  By the end of the forecast period, Brazil's insurance sector will likely remain a little underdeveloped by some metrics but with all the makings of a fully developed sector underway.

Brazil has led the wave of economic strength across Latin America and is now well into its third year of positive news. The results released by the major insurers in February and March 2011 in relation to calendar 2010 have indicated that premiums have remained resilient in the life and non-life segments. There was a slowdown in growth during 2008 and 2009 but by 2010 momentum had returned. At the same time, the insurance sector is benefiting from the presence of regional and global multinational companies. These groups leverage their scale across Latin America and access global capital markets. Brazil is also benefiting from a regulatory environment that is supportive, improving risk perceptions of the country by investors, lower long-term interest rate trends and a stronger currency. There is potential for non-life penetration and life density to rise from levels as income levels and general GDP rise and make Brazil a particularly exciting country to be involved with.

The corporate results available to indicate that 2010 was a good year for most of the companies in Brazil's life segment. This third year of growth continues its lead in Latin America and can be partially attributed to the success of the Vida Gerador de Beneficio Livre (VGBL) deferred annuity products launched nearly 10 years ago. However, penetration and density are low for life products and the development of the sector will rely to some extent on this increasing. Although more slowly than non-life products, premiums and penetration do look set to steadily climb over the medium-term.

Brazil's non-life segment has been particularly resilient, even during 2008 and 2009 non-life penetration in the country was relatively high, even taking into account that our figures include health insurance premiums. Standards of living are growing, so car ownership is on the increase and with it comes the need for insurance. There are a huge number of brokers in Brazil and this is the general method for the selling of non-life products. There is scope for penetration to rise and the biggest opportunities regionally remain in Brazil.
