July 1, 2011 - PRLog -- Traditionally Axapta is open to developers, who are familiar with C style programming languages, including Java, C++, Microsoft C# and of course old-good-days C.  Its architectural foundation MorphX has its own flavor X++ coding language.  AX is targeted to upper mid-market and large multinational corporations.   It is probably not the best offer to smaller businesses.  In larger organization it is common to have strong programming work force in its IT department, and this is where AX is pretty good fit.  This application is not something that should be installed by wizard out of the box and ready for use.  This is rather a platform, which requires its consultant deep exposure to traditional Axapta technologies (MorphX X++) as well as in new versions (2012, 2009) to Microsoft .Net, Visual Studio, CIL, Microsoft flavor of web services.  Let’s take a look at new trends, especially in version 2012:

1.   Metadata everywhere.  Formerly you had it in MorphX.  But it is now exposed to Microsoft Visual Studio developers.  In version 2012 X++ code is compiled into .Net CIL.  Does this mean that every C# programmer should be able to customize user interface?  Probably not, however if your internal programming group is managed by experienced developer who works directly for Microsoft Business Solution Partner, the answer may shift to Yes

2.   The advantage of C++ flavor.  Even if might be too unrealistic to launch custom coding projects internally within customer IT group, large pool of C#, Java, C++ programmers gives Microsoft Business Solutions the advantage to recruit the best ones to promote internal AX development

3.   Version 2012, isn’t it too revolutionary?  With opening Metadata to external development tools, with CIL, with merging Enterprise Portal and Windows Client interface custom table and query creation and other features it is probably catching up the future trends.  We would like, however to apply some level of conservatism.  MorphX is pretty solid and if you do modification there, chances are higher that it will be supported in the future in the sense of version upgrade.  Other instruments are under more turbulent technology change and advancing

4.   Opening the door to International Corporate ERP market.  Current versions support Unicode format.  It has two bytes coding per character.  European languages and Arabic do not require two bytes.  It is enough to have just one byte per symbol, as it is defined in ASCII tables.  Unicode opens the door to the languages, based on hieroglyphs, such as Japanese, Korean, Chinese.  We cannot prove it but it seems like Microsoft Business Solutions had its internal discussion on which Microsoft Dynamics ERP to expose to Unicode and make available on the wide international market.  AX is definitely a winner now, however by choosing former Axapta Microsoft doesn’t cover lower mid-market and smaller branches of Multinational Companies.   The gap was noticed and such companies as SAP rushed into with international offer of its small business packages SAP Business One

5.   Sister Corporate ERP applications in Microsoft Dynamics family.  From the standpoint of internal competition we would like to mention Dynamics GP or former Great Plains Dynamics and NAV or former Navision.  The acquisition of Navision Software (European Denmark based software development company) actually opened the door for Microsoft Business Solutions to European market with preexisting Navision customers, plus former Navision Software owned Axapta (acquired from Daamgard Software, another Denmark based software innovator).  Great Plains Software Dynamics also tried to go ahead and establish subsidiaries in Europe including Russian Federation (where the author was working in time for Sequoia Computers in Moscow, and we got reselling certificate in 1996).  Later on your author was engaged in Great Plains 7.5 localization project in Sao Paulo Brazil, sponsored initially by MBS Brazil.  After short period of promoting Navision internationally Microsoft Business Solutions finally decided to recommend and promote Axapta around late 2006
