The Toi Toi is NZ’s largest and most majestic native grass and has provided inspiration for Toi Toi Wines philosophy – to create distinctive wines of great quality from the regions in which they are most renowned. In this case the pinot gris hails from the spiritual home of Toi Toi, their Brookdale Vineyard in Marlborough, and the pinot noir from the Cromwell region in Central Otago, near the banks of the Clutha River.
With wines designed to reflect the wonderful cool climate and exceptional terroir of New Zealand’s finest wine regions, co-founder and co-owner Andrew Bonner, who started Toi Toi Wines with long-time friend and fellow New Zealander Kevin Joyce in 2006, is satisfied that their eminently drinkable creations leave the punters smiling.
“We really aim to make wines that express exceptional quality while ensuring that they always remain terrific value,” Bonner said.
“Making wine for us is about more than crushing grapes and fermentation...it’
“Our method is really very simple; make great wines using both new and traditional winemaking techniques, make these wines in the region best suited to each varietal and continue to experiment and innovate to aid in the bright future of exceptional New Zealand wines,” he said.
Toi Toi’s success story is driven by brilliant winemaker Chris Young who has over 20 years experience internationally and in New Zealand with an amazing working knowledge of Marlborough and its terroir.
A Roseworthy trained winemaker, Chris gained a solid understanding on international winemaking techniques and styles from time in vineyards across Europe, particularly in France.
A great asset to Toi Toi, Chris spends his days mixing old world approaches (like producing a pinot noir with no added yeast, a typically less protective style of winemaking) and new world winemaking philosophies (more focused on the fruit characteristics of the wine, for example) to perfect each variety available.
Toi Toi wines are available in Australia exclusively from Dan Murphy’s stores.
Toi Toi 2010 Marlborough Brookdale Reserve Pinot Gris
This single vineyard 2010 Reserve Pinot Gris from the Brookdale Vineyard was awarded a Blue-Gold Medal at the Sydney International Wine Show in 2011 and selected as one of the Top 100 wines of the competition.
The vineyard rests at the head of the Omaka Valley in Marlborough and has a very unique micro climate, open to full sun from the north and surrounded on all other sides by mountains. The resultant warm days and cool nights produce grapes of exceptional intensity and flavour and Renwick soils of stoney river silts with light loam are free draining.
Made from low cropping vines, the resultant wine is both vibrant and intense. After handpicking, only free run juice was used, racked with light lees to the fermentation vessels and fermented at low temperatures in stainless steel tanks. Following fermentation the wine was lees stirred for three months to enhance texture and complexity before maturation and bottling.
Pale straw in colour, the nose is dominated by ripe pear and peach aromas, with hints of acacia honey. The palate is rich, ripe and intense, showing classic spice and pear flavours, all supported by cleansing acidity. The finish is long and textural staying fresh and lively.
Toi Toi 2010 Central Otago Clutha Pinot Noir
The Toi Toi Clutha Pinot Noir is produced from contract grapes from Central Otago. With its cold winters, cool summer nights and warm sunny summer days Central Otago is the perfect environment for the pinot noir grape to slowly ripen, developing intensity of flavour while retaining the complexity of fruit characteristics that make the region renowned for the varietal.
There has been meticulous attention to detail in the vineyards - shoot thinning, hand leaf plucking and shoulder and bunch thinning pre-veraison - resulting in fruit of exceptional quality. The grapes were picked at optimum phenolic maturity before spending three weeks on skins with cold maceration. Hand plunging and gentle pressing preceded ten months in older French oak, leading to understated characters of mocha, hazelnut and spice.
The colour is a brilliant crimson hue with aromas that show ripe fruit characters typical of Central Otago pinot noir. The palate is generously proportioned with cherry stone and berry fruit flavours building well in the mouth. Sufficient but not obtrusive acidity gives the wine structure and length and the fine tannins typical of ripe skins give the wine a lovely powdery texture similar to fine cocoa.
“Toi Toi wines was established by New Zealanders Kevin Joyce and Andrew Bonner in 2006 to craft great quality wines which reflect New Zealand’s terroir at popular prices. The pair have called on their experience in the industry to create Toi Toi: Andrew has been part of the industry for more than 20 years including as Managing Director of Foster’s Group Pacific; Kevin, a chartered accountant, was acting CEO/Commercial Manager for Tohu Wines before establishing the Brookdale Vineyard and Toi Toi. There was only one Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc from the inaugural vintage but since then the Toi Toi range has grown to include; sparkling wine, prosecco, unoaked chardonnay, riesling, pinot gris, pinot noir, cabernet sauvignon and a late harvest riesling dessert wine. Mostly recently they have added organic wines to their portfolio.”
