ASSIST holds Nationwide Photo Competition on the Environment from June to September 2011

June 30, 2011 - PRLog -- Asia Society for Social Improvement and Sustainable Transformation, an international non-government organization based in the Philippines launched a Nationwide Photo Competition on the Environment on June 30, 2011.

Set to run until September 30, the photography contest looks for ten compelling photos to shake the world and promote awareness on the state of the world environment.

Photos should show any of the following themes: breathtaking wonders of nature, environmental destruction and its impacts, inspiring efforts at environmental protection.

ASSIST is presently based in Makati City, but also has operations in India and Vietnam and manages projects in over 10 countries. Through its Partner to Progress philosophy, it has successfully implemented such projects in collaboration with the European Union, United Nation Environment Program (UNEP), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), USAID, International Finance Corporation (IFC), GIZ, and DEG/ KFW amongst other organizations.

The Ten Photos to Shake the World Competition is a project of ASSIST's Research and Knowledge Management led by Sheena Carmel Opulencia. She says that the contest recognizes how sometimes, just one powerful visual can spring people up to action.

She explains, "we invite Filipinos of any age to snap a shot that will call on us and our leaders to act fast towards the protection of the Earth, our only home in this side of the Universe, the same way that tsunamis, earthquakes, typhoons and tornadoes all over the world have jolted humankind to the reality of climate change and environmental degradation."

Each participant may submit up to three entries, which should be e-mailed along with his full name, complete address, e-mail address, and mobile and landline numbers to tenphotos@assistasia.org. Each entry should have a 3 to 5 sentence description of what is in the frame and how it is relevant to the contest.

Photo-editing programs may be used, but only for basic post-processing actions for contrast, color balance, sharpening, cropping, dodging and burning. Collages will not be qualified. Entries should not bear watermarks, signatures, frames or other markings such as date and/or time stamps.

There will be 10 winners to be announced on October 2011, in an awarding ceremony that will also feature an exhibit of the entries of forty (40) finalists. These photos will also be exhibited in schools and shopping malls around Metro Manila, and various publications of ASSIST.

The final 10 winners will be chosen based on the following criteria: a) Substance, Impact and Creativity: 50% b) Composition, clarity and technical quality: 30% and c) votes on the Facebook page: 20%.

Cash prizes and special gifts await the 10 lucky winners.
