CCE, the first small business conference for creative professionals, continues with its second event in San Francisco August 5-7, 2011

Approaching a gallery is a crucial step to establishing the career of an artist or a curator, but it can be a daunting process for many who fear being ignored or turned away. The trick to feeling empowered in your outreach is to develop a well-planned strategy that targets the galleries you’re best fit for while honoring the gallery’s submission policy and respecting their business practices. Art marketing and public relations expert and founder and CEO of A&O, Lainya Magaña, will be leading a seminar entitled “How to Approach A Gallery: Submission Tips for Artists and Curators” at the Conference of Creative Entrepreneurs on Sunday, August 7, 2011 from 11am to Noon at the Women’s Building in San Francisco.

Founded in 2009, the Conference of Creative Entrepreneurs provides a program of seminars, expert panels and keynote lectures tailored to the needs of the creative, self-employed, small business entrepreneur. The speakers at CCE are experts in their field and real world, working professionals who participate in the conference to share their knowledge and experience on a range of topics relevant to creative professionals starting and running their own businesses. Topics range from small business bookkeeping to how to obtain your first book deal to branding, publicity and more.

Attendee quote: "For me, this was like SCORE workshops for my kind of business, with business people who were knowledgeable about my kinds of goals. I found it really inspiring to meet and hear from people who are doing what I want to do and doing it well."

According to a 2008 research report issued by the National Endowment for the Arts using 2000 census data, “nearly 2 million Americans identified an artist occupation as their primary job” and more than one in three of these artists are self-employed. Creative professionals who embrace the strategic and planning aspects of a small business stand to thrive and successfully stand out from the competition.

“Approaching a gallery should be taken as seriously as approaching a bank or an investor for startup funding,” says Lainya Magaña, founder of A&O – a marketing and PR agency devoted to the arts. “Like a bank or an investor, a great gallery is taking a risk in investing in your talent so they are going to be looking at you with a careful eye. Whether you’re an artist submitting your portfolio or a curator presenting a proposal, you need to have a plan, know who you’re targeting, establish your relevance and communicate your message thoroughly and effectively.”

The seminar on “How to Approach A Gallery: Submission Tips for Artists and Curators” will be held on Sunday, August 7th, 2011 from 11am to Noon at the Women’s Building in San Francisco.

A&O is the first public relations and marketing firm on the West Coast to specialize in the arts. A&O is pioneering a new model of business in the art industry, one based on advocacy, authenticity and integrity. As free agents of the art world, we act as liaisons, connecting artists, galleries, nonprofit institutions and art publications. Filling a communication void between entities, we foster not only art promotion, but creative collaboration. We aim to empower artists and arts organizations by facilitating access to their ideal audience-redefining the approach to aesthetic.

CCE was started in 2009 by Jamie Marie Chan, Lauren Venell, Laura Henry, Kristen Rask and Andrea Porter. Our first event was held in Seattle in 2010 and was a resounding success. Jamie, Lauren and Laura continue to organize CCE conferences in different cities on the west coast, while Kristen and Andrea now host a Seattle-based conference called Schoolhouse Craft. The mission of Conference of Creative Entrepreneurs (CCE) is to create a small business conference addressing the needs and disparities of the designer, artist and handcrafter (Creative Professionals).
