Business applications catering to the hotel industry are increasingly taking the Cloud journey. It’s not just a trend—this shift from traditional software models to the Internet based technology has steadily gained momentum over the past decade in the hotel sector. Cloud Computing is basically a model for provisioning and consuming of IT capabilities on a need-to-use basis. This also means that hotels pay-by-use. The concept allows the cost conscious hospitality industry to shift the cost of a system from a capital expenditure to an operational expense.

The trouble with traditional

Traditional systems consist of a plethora of hardware and software requirements and a multitude of human resources to install, configure, test, run, secure and update these systems. The cost of installing and running such a system is daunting for a hotel operation. The complexity of such traditional business applications and its “tough to bare” cost has forced many hotels today to switch to Cloud based hotel software.

Cloud benefits

The Cloud Computing concept primarily eliminates the need for a hotel to purchase hardware and software. All that is required by a hotel is a reliable Internet connection. The responsibility of hosting, managing and upgrading the application is the responsibility of the vendor. Secondly Implementation of systems based on a cloud platform is very convenient and takes minimal set-up time. With a Cloud application it is simply a matter of opening a browser, logging in, customizing the application and using it. The enhanced storage space allowed with Cloud Computing takes away the need for upgrading computer memory. With a storage level of more than a personal computer it helps hotel operations to go easy on the cost.

A key characteristic of Cloud Computing is that the users can share resources. This allows them all to have access to the resources on-demand. It has more flexibility than other network computing systems and saves time plus money for professionals in the hotel industry who are in a time crunch.

Mitigating risks

While many benefits exist there are also certain drawbacks for the moment with this concept - such as data security and over dependence on Internet connectivity. However if a hotel chain trusts its Cloud Computing vendor it can overcome the various stumbling blocks. Developing this trust boils down to knowledge of the vendor and its services. Generally an experienced vendor of Cloud based solutions can eliminate most of the risks associated with the Cloud for the hotel operation.

Next – mobility and collaboration

“Cloud 2” will make future business applications for the hotel industry more mobile and collaborative.  As users of social media networks our expectation is to have the information we need to be given to us in real-time. This is also the new direction of businesses. Cloud Computing will enable the consumer to keep ahead in business with ease just like keeping up with their personal lives through Facebook and Twitter.
