June 27, 2011 - PRLog -- LONG BEACH, CA. (June 2011) – Despite a cool, misty morning of “June Gloom”, over 400 eager shoppers waited in a line wrapped around the building for the new Team AMVETS Thrift Store to officially open. The Grand Opening and ribbon cutting ceremony truly was a community event with a full Color Guard flag presentation, Team AMVETS officers, dignitaries from the Department of Veterans Affairs, VA Hospital and Long Beach Chamber of Commerce, Bob Archuletta -Mayor Pro Tem of Pico Rivera, a representative for Congresswoman Laura Richardson, and many other community supporters of this long anticipated store.

Sales from the thrift store, at 3315 E. South Street in Long Beach, raise funds for AMVETS Department of California Service Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting American Veterans in California and Nevada. When completely staffed, the new store expects to employ 75 – 90 workers from the surrounding area. According to Jim Pidgeon, President of AMVETS Dept. of California Service Foundation, “The design of this flagship thrift store will become the new model for our other four existing stores in California and future ones we plan to build. Team AMVETS is committed to serving our veterans and this is a major source of raising funds. We are proud to bring this new store to the Long Beach community.”

Formerly a retail outlet and originally a roller skating rink, the Team AMVETS Thrift Store has been completely remodeled inside and out, but the wooden floor from the rink remains, giving the store an unusual “retro” vibe that goes along with some of their merchandise.

Team AMVETS store management representative Katherine Gough offered, “People are always looking for a good deal and we have tons of them, from vintage clothing to brand new items. New “gems” arrive every few days so it’s an adventure each time you shop here and every purchase helps our veterans.”

Team AMVETS has multiple thrift stores in California, including three in the San Diego area. The Long Beach Thrift Store is open Monday – Saturday (9 am to 6 pm). Donation centers and drop-off trailers are located throughout the state. For more on Team AMVETS, the Thrift Stores or for donation information, please call (877) 990-VETS (8387) or go to www.amvetsfoundation.com.

Team AMVETS and AMVETS Department of California Service Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports, promotes and defends the rights of California veterans of any military service, their families and communities where they live. The proceeds from AMVETS Thrift Store sales go towards providing vital services and programs to these worthy veterans. For more information call (877) 990-VETS (8387).
