PRLog - June 27, 2011 - Most of us go about our day and never think about how to breathe or breathing exercises. In, out. That’s all there is to it, right? Well maybe not. If you have COPD or moderate to severe asthma, the simple practice of breathing exercises takes on a whole new dimension in life.
Breathing Exercises at Home
To further complicate matters, improper breathing can come from something as common as having a stressful job. Being under stress causes a shallow, chest breathing style of inhaling which is detrimental to people living with COPD. Diaphragmic breathing, a breathing exercise, won’t come up very often in dinner conversation, but it’s one of the best ways for reducing anxiety and fatigue from a day’s activities. The diaphragm is a muscle under your lungs and above your stomach and is needs to be activated through specific breathing techniques for best breathing capacity.
The human body is full of muscles. The food they consume is oxygen molecules in the blood. The more air one consumes, the more oxygen molecules there are for muscles to absorb, produce more energy, and help to increase activity tolerance for activities of daily living which is especially important for those with COPD, including bronchitis, and emphysema and those with asthma.
Breathing exercises can be performed in the comfort of one’s own home without a prescription, or a co-pay. Suzanne Andrews, host of Functional Fitness on PBS TV, currently airing to over 45 million, and a clinical leader, shares specific fitness and breathing exercises that focus on improving functional lung capacity in her best- selling Functional Fitness COPD DVD. Realizing that not everyone can afford pulmonary therapy where one learns specific breathing techniques, Andrews designed a therapeutic program to help people living with COPD and asthma learn how to increase oxygen saturation and decrease shortness of breath. A former patient with only one lung who benefitted from Suzanne Andrews COPD methods tells his remarkable story in the video below.
