June 26, 2011 - PRLog -- Cross country skiing is a recognised sport with competitions held all over Finland and the locals partake in cross country skiing all through the winter months in order to keep fit and it is a very enjoyable sport.

The cross country ski tracks are opened in early October with snow artificially laid down to prepare the tracks before the natural snow arrives. The middle of November see’s the tracks fully opened and there are over 365km of tracks in order to use. The tracks go straight into the heart of Yllas National park and the scenery is absolutely breathtaking.

Cross country ski equipment can be hired for a small fee from many of the local activity centres and there are lessons on offer for those that have never tried the sport. The tracks are well designed and there is plenty of room for beginners with the more experienced skiers overtaking the slower ones.

There are also lots of different routes that can be taken, from smaller to the much longer routes. There are many restaurants and places to stop off on the way and after a morning cross country skiing, you will definitely feel like a good rest.

If you haven’t crossed country skies before, it is advisable to have lessons in the basics; once the basics are mastered you can go up onto the slopes and continue to master the art. There are many tracks and some are more difficult than others but all challenging slopes are well signposted and it is always best to stick to the less challenging tracks to begin with.
Cross country skiing can be done as well as downhill skiing or instead of and the children will take to it remarkably well. Even very young children will take to the tracks very well and will be facing the challenging tracks before the adults.

Cross country skiing is not just confined to the cross country ski tracks and can be practiced across the vast frozen lakes in Lapland. The tracks are well formed by November and there are longer and shorter tracks across the lakes. There is something quite magical about cross country skiing under the stars across a frozen lake.

The activity will certainly build up an appetite and there are plenty of good restaurants on route where you can have a hearty meal before retiring after a very busy day of cross country skiing.
