June 23, 2011 - PRLog -- Barrington, NJ - Edmund Optics® (EO), the premier provider of optical components, today announced that they are introducing real-life superheroes on their website. The Real-life Superheroes is part of EO’s on-going campaign to recognize innovators and leaders in the photonics industry and honor their achievements.

“All too often it is the unsung heroes of an industry who are making the critical advancements and innovations that keep the rest of us moving forward,” said Kirsten Bjork-Jones EO’s Director of Global Marketing Communications. “We want to change that in the photonics industry by bringing to light the stories of those innovators and leaders, promoting them to “Superhero” status to give them the recognition they deserve. Our new Hall of Heroes is where you’ll find their stories.”

Located on EO’s website at www.edmundoptics.com/superhero, the Hall of Heroes features individuals nominated by their peers for their unique contributions to the field of photonics, and the “superpowers” they bring to the industry. Heroes include:

•   Dr. Kathleen Cerqua-Richardson of Clemson University, who is advancing the science of precision glass molding as well as developing new infra-red glasses for creation of an advanced chemical sensor.

•   Robert Chappell, founder and CEO of EyeTech Digital Systems, who is developing eye-tracking technology that allows individuals to fully control all the mouse actions of a computer, giving them access to the benefits of today’s information technologies.

•   Dr. Douglas N. Arion of Carthage College, who plays a key role in the manufacturing and distribution of the high-quality, low-cost Galileoscope™ telescope kit that is part of a strategic initiative to improve worldwide math, science, and technology literacy.

•   Dr. Sungkyu Seo of Korea University, who plays a vital role in developing miniature, portable cytometry devices that provide quick and accurate blood analysis to identify HIV/AIDS, malaria and point-of-care testing by utilizing lab-on-a chip technology.

EO welcomes the public to visit its site at www.edmundoptics.com/superhero to nominate their own real-life superheroes. These awards represent an opportunity to honor and recognize these individuals, highlighting their work and unique contributions to photonics.
