June 23, 2011 - PRLog -- Who says there’s no such thing as a free lunch? If seriously cheaper grocery shopping wasn’t enough, Ireland’s favourite discount retailer, Lidl, is now offering the peckish public a chance to get their hands on free burgers, chicken and hotdogs right across the country this summer as part of an exciting new campaign that is being launched to coincide with its ‘King of the Grill’ promotion in stores.  The novel ‘Tweeting truck’, which hits the road from Thursday the 23rd of June, is linked to the discount retailer’s social media channels and represents a pioneering enterprise that is a first for Ireland.

The King of the Grill truck, which is emblazoned with dazzling barbeque-like flames, will ‘Tweet’ its way around the country for six weeks, complete with its very own Elvis character who represents ‘The King’.  The truck’s ‘taste trail’ hinges upon tweets and clues divulged on Facebook and Twitter, so that Lidl’s online fans can find out where its next stop will be.  At each stop, Elvis will serve up free food to the masses from the truck, whilst also dishing out special bar-coded promotional coupons so that shoppers can redeem money off Lidl’s King of the Grill barbeque products next time they’re doing their shopping in store.  There will also be prizes for the first 20 visitors to the truck at each location.  What’s more, Lidl is also embracing fresh new social media tools by giving Twitter followers the opportunity to win a top of the range gas barbeque by scanning the QR (Quick Response) code that appears in the artwork on the side of the vehicle.

The truck’s trail for the duration of the campaign is top secret until clues disclose otherwise, but it can be revealed that it is coming to a town or city near you soon!  An interactive map of Ireland will be used on Lidl’s Facebook tab so visitors to the site can see where the truck has been and where it might end up next.  The second component of this two-pronged online campaign is a competition element, which offers Facebookers the opportunity to win the Lidl food truck for their very own barbeque party.  The competition will be hosted on a separate Facebook tab (featured on www.facebook.com/lidlireland) and will take the form of a voting mechanic whereby visitors must rally their own Facebook friends to achieve pole position on the King of the Grill leader board.

As spokeswomen for Lidl Ireland, Aoife Clarke explains, “This is a very exciting project, especially given the fact this is something that no other retailer has ever done in Ireland before.  We are always looking for new ways to engage with our customers and this venture ties in perfectly with our ever-growing online community.  The truck will have superb visibility on Irish roads so even those who are not regular Internet users can follow the truck as it makes its way to its next destination.”
