June 23, 2011 - PRLog -- Legrand of France, a manufacturer of prefabricated cable pits made from recycled composites, has developed cable pits that represent a lighter alternative to their concrete equivalent. The time saved through quick assembly helps to reduce the need for supervisory staff, while the patented device also offers a host of other advantages, such as easier cable access and simpler installation procedures. Legrand is one of SNCF’s preferred suppliers.

Legrand’s prefabricated cable pits, which are made from recycled polystyrene, are used for shunting and connecting cables of all types. The cable pits are delivered in kit form and include  nestable lugs at each end. As a result, they are easy to assemble and do not require sealing or specific tools. Installation is quick and straightforward, as there is no need to wait for concrete to set.

Legrand cable pits can be installed at any time of the year, as they are unaffected by problems resulting from freezing temperatures. The cable pits can also be disassembled and reused at any time, while their design ensures that, once on site, they can be opened with ease even after several years.

The shape and reversibility of upright components, combined with the snap-out lids provided, offer a range of assembly options, which also facilitates the routing of cables and cables ducts into the pit. The depth can be adjusted according to requirements in increments of 25cm, which is the height of each component. Raising (or lowering) a cable pit, when repairing ballast or raising a platform, for example, takes just a few moments.

The top row is held in place by a cap made of galvanized steel that serves as a rabbet in order to accommodate the cover slabs. The metal covers are equipped with a locking device. A variety of cover slabs can be used to fully integrate the cable pit into its surroundings. The device’s modular nature means that it can be adapted to any requirement, based on the level of resistance needed. Thanks to the fitting of a removable cap, cables can be unreeled or moved with ease, without the need to interrupt service. Additional cabling can also be installed without any difficulty.

Installation of these cable pits demands the same level of care and the same quality of excavating work as those applying to conventional prefabricated monobloc pits, or pits that are poured in place. Legrand’s prefabricated cable pits ensure that the work site remains clean and neat, which helps to preserve the environment.

The innovation in prefabricated cable pits designed and developed by Legrand has a wide range of applications in a variety of industries, from civil engineering, metal construction and public works to the telecommunications (with the laying of fibre-optic cables) and railway sectors, among others.
