St John’s Eve is celebrated the night of June 23 to 24, a night which is known as the shorter night of the year and the most magical one. It is a very ancient feast in which people celebrates the beginning of the summer with a very characteristic rite that consist of switch on a bonfire. Long ago, the finality of this rite was to give strength to the sun because from this moment on, the days begin to be shorter until winter solstice arrives.
Valencia on these dates is full of people from all around the world and they gather in the beach where the bonfires are built. There will be the students of a Spanish language school of the city centre too.
Moreover, at midnight starts another rite which consists of jump the waves or to get the feet wet and ask for a wish at the same moment, a wish that will be fulfilled in that summer. Although it is true that many people jump the bonfire instead of the waves because there are a legend which says that the fire will give protection during all the year to those who dare to jump the flames, but, they usually jump the bonfire when there are only embers. However, other people use these embers to prepare the dinner.
But the feast does not end like that, after jump the waves and to make a wish, a lot of people will stay to enjoy the good weather and the festive atmosphere of the night. The 24th is not holiday in Valencia, so there will be a lot of people who will have to come back home early. Also, the students of the school will have class the next day. However, a lot of people, most of them young people, will remain enjoying at the beach until late.
The students of the Spanish school Costa de Valencia, will enjoy of this magical feast and it will be a good chance to practice what they have learnt at the school because they will be surrounded with a lot of Spanish people in a festive atmosphere where everything is good and everything is possible.
The students will enjoy not only the fire and water but also of the fireworks that are always present in the festivities of Valencia. As conclusion, the students will live a magical night in Valencia beach, an unforgettable memory that will always be with them and a desire that could become real.
