Unscientific Study, A Comparison of Internet Search Results

A comparison between a very large unnamed internet search and Norele.com. Who is well served is the question.

June 21, 2011 - PRLog -- I just completed a very unscientific study, on the date of June 20, 2011. I compared the search results using a very large unnamed internet search engine and one of the smallest, Norele.com. First, I did a search for LED lighting like I was going to do a school paper (or just had an interest in the subject) on a very large unnamed internet search. I typed into the search box "LED lighting" and hit search. Then I did the same thing on Norele.com except first I clicked the .edu suffix tab. The .edu site suffix specific search is one of 4 that also include .org, .gov, and .mil. There is a general tab for any site suffix. All of these are easily accessed from the home page of Norele.com or Norele.mobi.

The first page of the very large unnamed search engine results were 3 labeled ads for companies that sell LED lights followed by 2 online dictionary results, one as an abbreviation, one as a spelt out word, light emitting diode. Next on the first page was a listing heading "shopping results," then 8 commercial results of LED lights, 2 business news results, then at the bottom 8 related searches for led lighting. Then on the second page were 3 labeled ads for LED lighting, a bar of images for led lighting, another commercial listing, then a listing from a .org about LED lighting. Next there were 7 commercial results, followed by a site that helps design LED lighting applications. Then the list of 8 searches related to LED lighting. That concludes the second page of results. The third page started with only two labeled ads for LED lighting, followed by 4 additional commercial listings. Next was an article about information on LED lights from a .org. On page 4 was an article about how LED lights work from a information site. That's as far as I went. Out of 4 pages there were very few noncommercial results.

Over on Norele.com, which lists exact match and .edu sites first if found, the results were as follows. The first return using Norele.com under the .edu tab was to the Lighting Research Center. ( http://www.lrc.rpi.edu) This site had useful information about the research aspects of light. This article was followed by 24 additional listings that had a .edu suffix and contained LED lighting. The next section on Norele.com was all the words and the .edu suffix that contained 41 results. Again the results all were from .edu sites. Next section was remaining results with .edu suffix. This section on Norele.com under the .edu tab contained over 120 articles. Total articles without commercial content was over 180 and listed in the first three sections. Next section was remaining results with any site suffix. This section contained results from some .com's, an .eu, and some .org site suffixes.

In fairness to the very large unnamed search engine, I would like to say within the over 39,000,000 plus results the very large unnamed search engine had and what Norele.com had was probably there somewhere. I just didn't take the time to go through the over 39,000,000 plus results to see. The point is this. Without advanced internet navigation knowledge, anyone from grade school children doing homework to grandmothers and granddads looking up medications and every age in between can easily use http://www.norele.com and http://www.norele.mobi. If the data base has the information, the information will clearly show up in the search results.
