By: Rick Amernick Washington DC – June 19, 2011: Over 20 members of the local running group, DC Capital Striders (DCCS), met downtown to volunteer their time at the DC Triathlon. Volunteers staffed an aid station at mile 3 on the run course setting up 4 tables, pouring thousands of cups of Powerade™ and water to all participants. “I always enjoy volunteering at events such as this,” says Rick Amernick, founder of DCCS. “It’s a great feeling giving back to the fitness community where I find so much inspiration.” DC Capital Striders was honored to be invited to participate in this annual event and have been consistently recognized for their ability to recruit and retain volunteers. Members of DCCS take this role very seriously and understand the importance they play on race day. Not only do they provide hydration and fuel for the athletes, but they also act as eyes and ears to the race directors in case of emergency. This was evidenced as one of the professional athletes had a medical emergency near their station. It didn’t take long for the volunteers to recognize and react to this situation. The race first aid crew were notified and the athlete was transported back to the race start. This is just one of the many responsibilities of the job .
