In the UK around 700,000 babies are born every year. Sadly 1 in 30 of these babies will be born with a health condition that will affect them for life. That’s around 70 families a day that are told their baby has been born with an illness, disability or in the worst case scenario that their baby’s life is at risk. Sparks is one of the few UK charities that seek to find treatments and cures for all conditions that affect pregnancy, babies and young children. We work with leading doctors and research teams in the UK to ensure we fund the highest quality research with the great chance of saving and changing lives forever. The challenges they are set out to endure not only include immensely cold temperatures around minus 30 degrees Celsius, and long tiring days not knowing when its night or day due to constant sunlight. But they also have the threat of hungry polar bears, whose paws can rip through skin like paper, powerful storms causing zero visibility and frostbite serious enough that they could lose fingers, toes, etc. The men will be joined by Alan Chambers MBE as the expedition leader and Dr Ed Coats as the expedition doctor. Alan planned and led the first British team to walk unsupported from Canada to the Geographical North Pole. After seventy gruelling days on the ice hauling all supplies, Alan and team-mate Charlie Paton stood glorious at the top of the world. Upon return from the top of the world Alan, aged 32, was awarded the MBE by Her Majesty the Queen for Determined Leadership in Constant Adversity. Alan is also a motivational speaker on teamwork and leadership. Dr Ed Coats was plucked out of obscurity and thrust into the limelight, when he was chosen to join James Cracknell and Ben Fogle on their epic race to the South Pole earlier this year. The race was the first of its kind since Captain Scott was beaten 97 years ago by Norwegian Amundsen. This is an extraordinary challenge and a huge amount of money for a great cause...
