Audie’s real-life battle stories are what movies are made of. He even starred in 1955’s “To Hell and Back”, a movie about his own life story. In real life battle, he led by example, fighting in the front ranks right along side his men. In one account, Audie single-handedly defeated a German attack, killing dozens of Germans.
In his 3 years of service, he quickly rose up in rank from Army Private to Staff Sergeant and was given a “battle field” commission as 2nd Lieutenant, earning him 33 awards and decorations including the Medal of Honor, the highest military award for bravery that can be awarded to any individual in the United States of America. His awards also include 5 decorations by France and Belgium. Having fought in 9 major campaigns across the European Theater, Audie quickly became a legend within the 3rd Infantry Division. Audie had quickly become and is still known as one of the best combat soldiers of this or any other century.
