Getting started in jewelry design or jewelry making?

That was a question I asked myself for a long time. I had a desire to take up a hobby of sliver work, but had no idea were to begin. So I started by asking established professional fine jewelers in jewelry stores at the mall but did not get far. The I began talking to small bench jeweler repair shop owners, they were so very helpful.

I was given sources for tools and suggestions for books to read. But mostly they just suggested I start sketching my designs in a notebook. bought a couple basic tools but still was just not getting where I wanted to be. I had an uncle that used to make these sailing ships from copper plates while he was at sea to keep him busy, he began teaching me that copper works a lot like silver and gold but is much less expensive to practice on.

So my very first pieces were made from copper, but still I wanted more. I found that the museum of fine arts in Boston had an evening program open to the general public for gold and silver smithing. The instructor happened to be a MS. Linda Priestly a well known Paul Revere style old world silversmith with a shop on the Lexington Green, in Massachusetts thats where the revolutionary war started. Talk about history and a great place for a silversmith shop.

Anyway I attended that school in the evening for several years and learned and and incredible knowledge on how to work with noble metals. My first designs in the fine arts school were silver lapel pins, and to this day i design and produce them. I began creating handcrafted jewery for family and friends. But my desire for jewelry design that created fine gemstone jewelry, and work with diamonds, sapphires and rubies was a driving force for me and I kept at it, eventually I was able to find my way to Bangkok, Thailand where about 70% of the commercial grade gemstones in the world are cut.

MS. Priestly introduced me to the wholesale tool suppliers and jewelers markets in Boston which are normally not open to the general public, this was a huge break, I began to buy my findings and sheet silver and gold needs, as time went on more and more doors opened up for me as a small still amateur bench jeweler.

So what I'm trying to get at is just start dont take no for an answer and now with the internet here to help it is much easier to find those resources and in much less time than it took me. I started the Jewelry Designers Resource Center as a side line in 1975 it began to bring regular work for me still a side line about 1979, and in 2007 the Jewelry Designers Resource Center became part of the JSR Group Inc. an International Business Corportaion.
