June 17, 2011 - PRLog -- This June and July, more than 50 Barstow-area students will spend their summer building a model home, learning how to change the oil in a car or how to give a facial.

It’s all part of Barstow Community College’s summer youth program that runs from June 27 to July 21. Now in its third year, the participants take home real life skills and gain a better understanding of the careers they can pursue, said Sandi Thompson, director of Career Technical Education at the college.

The program is paid for by government efforts to increase workforce training. This year, sixth, seventh and eighth graders can take classes and learn about job prospects in the areas of automotive services, cosmetology and math used for construction. The college’s automotive and cosmetology programs are two of the strongest programs offered through the camp, Thomas said.

“The camp exposes students to a wide range of career options,” said Thomas. “It helps them figure out what program areas suit them, and they learn what it takes to go into those careers.”

The film production and marketing track is another popular program through the camp. Students learn how to write a script and how to speak while being recorded. The students produce a DVD of the camp activities that all participants receive.

The students will tour Hector Mine and Diamond Pacific, an activity which will expose them to a variety of different jobs, from biologists to heavy equipment operators. Thomas also brings in police officers to speak about how certain tattoos and criminal records can prevent young adults from achieving the careers they aspire to.

The camp runs from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday, at the college. Registration is still open. To register, call 760-252-2411 ext. 7386.
