Shop Insurance Broker May Have Answer To High street Problem

June 17, 2011 - PRLog -- Welsh high street shops are suffering, according to a recent report by one comparison website, however, Welsh shop insurance broker, Motaquote, suggests that local governments could be doing more to help small businesses.

According to the report, 41% of the 1,000 people surveyed revealed that, on average, there was a poor choice of shops on their local high street and a further 13% felt their local high street was in a "shabby" condition.

But what is it that's damaging the local Welsh high street? High rent, expensive rates and the fact that smaller shops simply cannot compete with their larger rivals are just some suggestions. However, “online trading must take a share in the blame in the drop in high street sales – at least to a certain extent,” suggests Motaquote MD, Nigel Lombard.

He added that although “online retail and other economic factors must take some of the blame there is a very real issue with the state of our local high streets and the lack of choice available to Welsh consumers. There is also a strong sense that many of the larger, national high street retailers have effectively priced smaller retailers out of the market.”

Mr Lombard went on to say that local governments need to do more to help get small business retailers back on the high street as well as make them  a more pleasant place to shop by making parking or “park and ride” cheaper and more accessible to the general public.
