Boca Raton, FL – Hollander Law Firm proudly supports the 6 Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) – June 15, 2011. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) was launched on June 15, 2006, by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA) and the World Health Organization at the United Nations.
The purpose of WEAAD is to provide an opportunity for communities around the world to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older persons by raising awareness of the cultural, social, economic and demographic processes affecting elder abuse and neglect. In addition, WEAAD is in support of the United Nations International Plan of Action acknowledging the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue. WEAAD serves as a call-to-action for individuals, organizations, and communities to raise awareness about elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation.
To recognize and celebrate World Elder Abuse Awarness Day you are encouraged to wear something purple.
According to INPEA, Information on the extent of abuse in elderly populations is limited. The few population-based studies that have been conducted suggest that between 4% and 6% of elderly people have experienced some form of abuse in the home.
INPEA also stated that the elderly are also at risk of abuse in institutions such as hospitals, nursing homes and other long-term care facilities. In a survey in the United States, for example, 36% of nursing-home staff reported having witnessed at least one incident of physical abuse of an elderly patient in the previous year, 10% admitted having committed at least one act of physical abuse themselves, and 40% said that they had psychologically abused patients.
