Statistics Show Longevity of Seniors is a Double-Edged Sword

While an increase in life span should be a celebrated event, this demographic trend will put a strain on social security and other government services.

June 14, 2011 - PRLog -- Recent publications from the Federal Agency of Administration on Aging shows those in the United States who are 65 or older will increase from about 13% of the population to 19% of the population by 2030 partially bolstered by an increase in life span.

The older person population defined as those persons 65 years or older currently number 39.6 million as of 2009 (the latest year for which data is available). This demographic segment represents about one in every eight Americans. By 2030 estimates indicate, there will be about 72.1 million older persons, more than twice their number in 2000 and people 65+ are expected to be represented by one in every five Americans.  Government officials and forecasters have started to express concern on the potential strain on social security and other government services that service this age group.

In anticipation of this shift in demographics HappyHealth.net has been designed to educate and inform this age group on four main pillar areas of health, recreation, travel and relationships. "These topics are frequently on the minds of seniors” Mary Albert, a senior editor states.  “There is a relationship between these four pillars and their quality of life.  Our site is designed to be a source of information on any outstanding questions on these subjects.”

The site also reviews medical alert systems http://www.happyhealth.net/medical-alert-reviews, commonly used by the aging population who still wish to live in their homes.  Co-founder Jack Stewart states that the inspiration for the site came to him after a close friend had a serious health accident due to using faulty medical equipment.  “Our goal is to ensure that our site reviews and critiques the many common products used by this age group.” he commented.  “Our first product review looks at the medical alert systems. There is a growing demand for medical alert systems which are used to summon emergency help for those at risk of a fall or other sudden disability.”
