Monokini – This swimsuit trend (a one-piece suit with the sides and most of the front cut out so it covers about as much as a bikini) emerged last year and is gaining more steam in 2011. Monokinis are a statement swimwear piece, perfect for ultra lounge pools, luxury resorts and hotels and European beaches.
Ruffles – This is a major trend for everything, from clothes to lingerie and, yes, swimwear. Ruffles not only add an air of playfulness and femininity, they can also cover up certain “problem areas”. A ruffle along a bikini top can make a small bust look fuller. A ruffled skirt can disguise a lack of hips. A vertical ruffle down the front of a one-piece can create a slimming appearance.
Retro/vintage inspired pieces – From high-waisted bottoms to halter-tie tops to polka-dotted prints, swimwear styles popular in the 40s and 50s are getting an updated look for Summer 2011. The pieces are demure yet fun and sophisticated.
Metallic sheen – It’s one thing to wear an eye-catching color, but it’s even better when that color is paired with a metallic finish that gives your swimsuit a bit of shine. Along with traditional metallic colors – gold, silver, bronze –new metallic colors, such as turquoise, yellow and coral, are heating up as well.
