Connecticut Better Business Bureau says businesses must address consumer trust issues to maintain customers and promote growth.

Consumer trust is being eroded by a continued increase in scams ranging from unscrupulous business practices in online commerce, to door-to-door sales pitches from unlicensed and unqualified contractors who peddle low-ball estimates.

In the absence of consumer trust, reputable Connecticut companies lose business to shady operators, and although consumers believe they are saving money by seeking the lowest bid, they pay a great deal more in the long run.

Victims may lose their deposit if the scammers skip town, or pay additional money to have shoddy work fixed or redone by reputable contractors.

At the Connecticut Business Expo, Connecticut Better Business Bureau President, Paulette Scarpetti, said businesses must educate consumers about the risks of making hasty decisions based on price alone.

“These are issues that affect all Connecticut businesses and consumers.  Customers should understand that misplaced trust comes at a price, and businesses should be addressing these concerns and clearly explaining the benefits of hiring a qualified vendor/business.

Connecticut BBB warns that if consumers don’t understand the issues involved, they may be less inclined to trust a legitimate estimate that is based on quality materials and workmanship.   If businesses build relationships based on trust, consumers will be more inclined to understand the real costs and benefits of dealing with a local company.”
