June 13, 2011 - PRLog -- Packing for a move can be one of the most stressful parts of the moving process. Humboldt Storage and Moving, greater Boston’s oldest moving company, agent of United Van Lines and experts in stress-free moving is gearing up for a busy season of helping people move those boxes and has created a number of consumer tips to help.

Proper packing can mean the difference between a smooth moving experience and one complicated by broken household goods and shattered memories. As with any part of a move, the need to plan ahead is essential including getting all the necessary packing materials. Many tips are below with even more tips in this video:

Choose the proper packing materials: Most if not all of your materials can be obtained from your moving company. Make sure you have various sizes of cartons, and use unprinted paper for packing. While you can use newspaper, be aware that the ink will rub off on certain items such as china.

Give yourself plenty of time: Packing for a move always seems to take longer than expected. Be sure to leave yourself ample time to pack as a rushed packing job can lead to significant damage and lots of stress on the other end.

Know what not to pack: There are a number of items that should not or cannot be placed onto a moving van including, gasoline, aerosol cans, ammunition and cleaning fluids. Other items that should be kept with you and not on a moving van include high-value items such as cash, deeds and wills, stamp or coin collections or other family memories.

Packing China: It is important to use cartons specifically made for dishes, glassware and silverware. Pack flat china at the bottom of the carton, wrapping each piece individually and standing them on their sides- they are actually strongest this way. Pack bowls and other odd-shaped items at the bottomed or in the middle layer and pack items such as cups upside-down. Make sure not to make the boxes too heavy. Ask your moving company for a brochure on how to pack other items.

Moving Day Box: As with any situation, there can be bumps in the road. Prepare a box of necessary items for you and your family in the event of delays. Those items can include soap, toiletries, towels, first aid kit, snacks and other important items in case you get stranded or redirected.

As always, check with the moving company that was selected to handle your move and seek out professional advice. And consider having a professional packing service help if the task is going to be overwhelming.
