Airplanista Magazine to Remain Free for Worldwide Distribution

After a short market test in May, 2011 to see of the digital magazine reading public was ready to accept a paid subscription model, the popular new media, all-digital aviation publication has chosen to remain free for distributed around the world.

June 10, 2011 - PRLog -- The June, 2011 issue of Airplanista Magazine marks an important turning point in the business model of the new media, all-digital publication. After a short market test to assess the popularity of a paid subscription model, publisher Dan Pimentel is now making the monthly aviation magazine free for Internet readers to enjoy without subscription or login required.

"This is the Wild West of publishing right now” said Pimentel, who is Airplanista’s editor and graphic designer. “As advertisers move away from print, and print publications evolve into the digital realm, there are plenty of questions about how the public will react to these paid content models. On one hand, with so many tablet computers being sold, you would think that readers are primed and ready to accept the fact that quality content can no longer be free. That is not the case with our readers. We discovered very quickly in our market test that a free, no subscription model was far more palatable than a paid model.”

Airplanista has also re-focused the magazine’s mission, and will be securing content that honors and assists pilots and aviation enthusiasts who advocate for general and business aviation. “There are thousands of people who work at the grass roots level as proponents of GA, who do great work presenting flying to those who no little about the aviation family,” said Pimentel. “With each issue, we will present articles profiling these GA advocates, while also giving them solid advice and assistance to help them complete their advocacy mission.”

To help the magazine’s mission of telling the stories of these aviation advocates, it is imperative to have increasing online traffic coming to the magazine’s viewing site. Stated Pimentel, “we found that traffic fell off a cliff during our paid model market test, and once we switched back to free distribution, traffic for the June issue was ten times more than May, which was the pay model’s test issue. This proves that to be successful in the outreach program which is at the very core of our mission, we need to have Airplanista remain free, available without login or subscription.”

Airplanista Magazine is published on the first of each month, online at http://airplanista.com. Each new online issue is offered using a state-of-the-art digital publishing platform that includes Mobile 3.0, allowing iPad, iPhone, Android and Blackberry users to read the magazine without downloading an app.

With a tagline of “Sometimes serious, sometimes humorous, always unpredictable.”, the magazine presents aviation stories, aviation commentary, and stunning aviation photography each month to a target audience that is a combination of general aviation pilots, aircraft owners, professional pilots and those in aviation business and industry.
