CAMBRIDGE, MD… As a strong supporter and active member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), Cambridge Architectural has made a financial donation to the construction of the new Project Haiti Orphanage and Children’s Center in the Delmas District of Port-au-Prince. The project, headed by USGBC, seeks to rebuild the facility to meet Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification.
By contributing to USGBC, Cambridge has supported the many rescue and relief efforts undertaken by the Council. USGBC has helped to rebuild New Orleans schools lost to Hurricane Katrina, to reestablish the tornado-devastated city of Greensburg, KS, and now to reconstruct Haiti’s Foundation Enfant Jesus, an organization that provides for the immediate health and emotional needs of orphaned children and facilitates a pathway to adoption.
The Foundation Enfant Jesus was established in 2003 as a non-government, non-denominational, apolitical charity to care for abandoned, orphaned, HIV-positive and special needs infants and children. When the disastrous earthquake of 2010 struck, the facility was completely destroyed. Furthermore, thousands of children were suddenly left without one or both parents, and became in desperate need of a place like the Foundation Enfant Jesus, that could provide for their basic needs.
USGBC recognized the urgency of the situation, and reached out to the Greenbuild community to convene a 35-person “all-star”
“We are very proud to be part of such a noble effort,” says Larry Windsor, General Manager of Cambridge Architectural. “This project is a relatively small, but critical, step in the rebuilding of a devastated nation, and we want to help in any way that we are able.”
The project fund will utilize 100% of donations directly for the design and construction of the new facility, which will serve as a symbol of sustainability to the rebuilding nation, and to the entire developing world. USGBC is committed to enlisting Haitian-based companies and their native employees in undertaking this effort.
This project not only presents the opportunity to transform the lives of countless children and Haitian citizens, but it also demonstrates the long-lasting benefits of high-performance green technology in underdeveloped areas, an initiative that Cambridge Architectural fully supports.
