June 9, 2011 - PRLog -- The San Diego Unified School District  and AMSOLAR Corporation, the U.S. subsidiary of Payom Solar AG, announced today the groundbreaking of a 5 Megawatt solar power system.

The system will be built under a long-term Power Purchase Agreement, and cover 20 sites that, combined, will place 23,000 solar panels on more than 80 rooftops and construct solar carports at six sites.

“The structure of this partnership ensures that the district has access to long-term energy stability with no taxpayer investment required, while at the same time bringing clean, renewable solar power for 20 of our campuses," said Bill Kowba, superintendent of San Diego Unified School District.

"San Diego continues to set the trend by choosing renewable energy sources," said Jared Blumenfeld, Administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Pacific Southwest Region. "By investing in solar rooftops, the city’s schools will be giving everyone the practical lesson that clean energy solutions can reduce costs and air pollution at the same time."

The solar energy system will produce solar power equivalent to 64 percent of the energy consumption at these 20 sites and generate 11 percent of SDUSD’s total District-wide energy needs. This project supplements SDUSD’s existing 4.17 Megawatts of solar power situated in 28 sites, bringing SDUSD’s total solar capacity to 9.17MW on 48 sites.

In addition to owning, operating and maintaining these solar energy facilities, AMSOLAR will be actively engaging with San Diego Unified School District campuses, as well as the broader community, through its GIVING foundation by developing and funding programs to promote solar energy awareness, education and exploration.

“At a time when AMSOLAR is expanding nationally, we are excited to announce this partnership in our hometown, which reinforces San Diego's position as a solar leader,” said Joshua Weinstein, Managing Partner of AMSOLAR Corporation. “We are especially proud that through AMSOLAR GIVING we will be able to inspire many of SDUSD’s 132,000 students to think critically about energy consumption and our collective responsibility to embrace solar and other renewables.”

The sites to receive solar power under the agreement will be:
•   Baker Elementary
•   Benchley/Weinberger Elementary
•   Boone Elementary
•   Clairemont High
•   Edison Elementary
•   Emerson Elementary
•   Encanto Elementary
