Scrub is a delightful little mouse who gets his name from his fanatical scrubbing of everything. A bit timid, he dislikes the darkness of the sewers and wonders if outside more light can be found. He also hopes to discover what happened to his beloved mother, who mysteriously vanished. Scrub relies greatly on Chikin, a daring little mouse who has decided that one day she wants to become a chicken! When the two escape, they meet up with the streetwise Rat—a bold, fearless, and eternally optimistic sort. It’s a connection that just may provide the ticket to their dreams.
‘Chikin and Scrub is the most charming adventure of two little mice who escape the power of KAT and travel the streets of London looking for a place to belong. An exciting and unpredictable tale children will love.’ – Joyce Norman, Author & Publisher
Botha’s inspiration for Chikin and Scrub came one day as she watched a ray of light splash across a wall. ‘I had an urge to stand in the light just to feel the ray on my face, and that’s when the idea came to me. I wondered what it must feel like if you’ve never had sunshine on your face, and how it would change your way of thinking once you had felt it.’

About the Author: Originally from South Africa, Ingrid Botha is presently an administrator in Hampshire, England. ‘But,’ she says, ‘when I’m not working flat out, fighting with household chores, children and animals, I’d love to write more. When my children were little, I would tell them a made-up story each night, and afterwards I would think, “I should write that down.” I always write with my own life and experiences in the background—it’
Of Chikin and Scrub, she says, ‘Most times I think we learn too late that a positive attitude is so important. I wanted the children who read this story to see how odds can be beat, and that they shouldn’t let their dreams be just that—dreams. I hope that both parents and children will read this book and have a good laugh together. And hopefully, the story will also be a bit thought provoking and lead to some discussion.’
